The University of Minnesota (U of M) Online and Distance Learning (ODL), part of the College of Continuing Education (CCE), offers over 150 online and distance courses through 40 different academic departments, comprising undergraduate certificates, bachelor's degrees, professional development courses and certificates and one master's degree to over 5,600 students annually. All courses are fully accredited by the U of M. CCE helps make U of M courses accessible to students not admitted to the University and to admitted students wanting to supplement their course work with flexible options. CCE also partner with organizations to deliver learning options designed to meet their specific needs through onsite training.

In 2008 Times Higher Education ranked the University at 87 in its ranking of the world's top 200 universities In 2008, Shanghai Jiao Tong University ranked the U of M at 28 on its list of Academic Rankings of World Universities U.S. News & World Report's 2009 Rankings placed the undergraduate program of the University as the 61st-best National University in the US. (National Universities are defined as those universities which "offer a full range of undergraduate majors as well as masters and doctoral degrees. In many cases, they place strong emphasis on research and receive federal money to support their research endeavors.")
